INTERSESSION COURSES

Held during the three weeks before the spring semester, Johns Hopkins University’s Intersession program invites undergraduates to pause their regular coursework and immerse themselves in concentrated, discussion-based learning. The program encourages intellectual curiosity, hands-on exploration, and the freedom to experiment with new ideas. Through short, intensive courses taught by Johns Hopkins faculty and visiting experts, students can explore topics that connect academic study with real-world questions about citizenship, community, and the challenges of democratic life.

The SNF Agora Institute creates spaces where scholars, practitioners, and students come together to examine the conditions that allow democracy to thrive. Through its Intersession offerings, the institute gives students a chance to connect theory with practice, learning from faculty and fellows whose work addresses some of the most pressing questions in civic life including how people build trust across difference, use information responsibly, and participate in shaping a more inclusive and resilient democracy.

SNF AGORA INTERSESSION 2026 COURSE OFFERINGS:

Political Comedy Course

AS.196.215 – POLITICAL COMEDY AND ENTERTAINMENT: SAVING OR STIFLING DEMOCRACY?

Entertainment media dominates our lives more than ever before. We increasingly live in a global media society in which the line separating what is news vs. entertainment is blurred. We elect celebrities to public office and treat our politicians like celebrities. This entertainment boom has occurred as democratic politics has become more fraught. US electoral politics is defined by partisan polarization and division, authoritarian politicians challenge democratic norms, and press freedoms face pressure from government institutions. This course explores the relationship between these changes in entertainment media and democratic politics with a focus on late-night comedy, satire, and parody.

AI and E-Waste Course

AS.196.216 – USING AI TO STREAMLINE E-WASTE MANAGEMENT IN BALTIMORE

Much of the precious and critical metals needed to build the future can be found in electronic waste valued at $91B annually worldwide, with less than one-quarter recycled. The rest ends up in landfills and incinerators in wealthy countries and in fire pits in developing nations. Students will learn the basics of the Hopkins AI Lab, including models such as Azure OpenAI’s GPT-5, Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4, and Meta’s Llama 4 Maverick. They will apply their knowledge in a team sprint hackathon to build tools for residents, Public Works employees, and local leaders working to improve the e-waste ecosystem in Baltimore.

Frontiers of Freedom Course

AS.196.351 – FRONTIERS OF FREEDOM: CIVIL SOCIETY’S ROLE IN THE GLOBAL DEMOCRATIC ECOSYSTEM

This course examines how civil society promotes and defends democracy while authoritarianism rises worldwide. Through theoretical discussions and case studies, students will learn how global pro-democracy networks operate. They will analyze challenges these networks face, strategies they use, and the ways activists collaborate across borders. Students will also consider how global democratic backsliding affects democratic health in the United States.

Theater and Civics Course

AS.196.217 – THEATER, CIVICS, AND POLITICAL DISCOURSE: EXPLORING GOVERNANCE THROUGH PERFORMANCE

This course examines how theatre mirrors and critiques governance, power structures, and civic responsibility. Students will engage with plays centered on political power, authority, and democratic dynamics. The first segment focuses on a shared deep reading of one foundational play. In the final segment, students complete a comparative assignment analyzing two additional works and present key points of comparison in class discussion.
