Consuelo Amat joins the SNF Agora Institute as Assistant Professor of Political Science. She is also a senior research scholar at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP). Previously, Amat was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University’s Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society (PACS).
She is interested in the study of state repression, armed and unarmed resistance, political violence, and the development of civil society in authoritarian regimes, with a regional focus in Latin America and Africa. She also studies quantitative and qualitative methods. The United States Institute of Peace, the John F. Enders Foundation, the Tinker Foundation, and Yale University’s MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies have supported her research.
Amat received her PhD in political science with distinction from Yale University. She also holds an MA in conflict resolution from Georgetown University, and BA degrees in international affairs and philosophy from the University of Colorado at Boulder. During the 2017-2018 academic year, Amat was a USIP Jennings Randolph Peace Scholar. She has also worked at the Brookings Institution, the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict, Peace Action West, and Human Rights Watch.
