Digital Media in the 2020 Election

Mason Hall, Homewood Campus

As the 2020 campaign gets into full swing, American voters worry about the integrity of our elections—with good cause. As digital campaigning has become the norm, so have challenges like campaigns spreading misinformation and disinformation, ads targeting voter segments to keep them at home, users being able to mask their identities, and the potential for foreign meddling through social media.

Join us for a roundtable discussion with journalists and scholars who will explore the state of digital campaigning, advertising, and analytics in electoral politics—and what role political campaigns, digital consultants, social media platforms, and government regulations should play in safeguarding elections.

Speakers include:

  • Jesse Baldwin-Philippi, associate professor, Communications and Media Studies, Fordham University
  • April Glaser, journalist, Slate
  • Sasha Issenberg, author, Victory Lab: The Secret Science of Winning Campaigns
  • Daniel Kreiss, associate professor, UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media
  • Nancy Scola, senior technology reporter, POLITICO
  • Scott Shane, reporter, New York Times’’ Washington bureau
