Prospect magazine has included Anne Applebaum, senior fellow with SNF Agora Institute and an associate professor of the practice with the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, in its list of “the world’s top 50 thinkers for the Covid-19 age.” The magazine has been creating similar lists since 2004, but this year, they were struck by how much the pandemic shaped their list of great minds. “We decided to make a virtue of the disruption,” writes editor Tom Clark, “and produce an entirely new list for a shaken world that is beginning to reset.”
The article’s authors recognize Applebaum’s contribution to understanding the decline of the American international order: “Her sharp pen is as persuasive as any in presenting the idea of the ‘west’ as a morally serious project—and one whose loss we may come to mourn,” they write.
