The SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University hosted the 2024 iteration of Democracy Day on August 22nd, bringing together over 1,300 incoming students to explore and engage with the principles of democratic participation. The day-long event featured a series of lectures, interactive workshops, and discussions aimed at encouraging students to become active contributors to their communities and the broader democratic process. University leaders, esteemed faculty, and guest speakers provided insights into the importance of civic engagement, critical thinking, and respectful discourse in sustaining a healthy democracy.
Throughout the day, students participated in activities designed to foster skills in civil dialogue and collaborative problem-solving. Highlights included a civic engagement fair where students connected with various organizations and learned about opportunities to get involved both on campus and in the Baltimore community. Prominent figures such as historian Anne Applebaum and political analyst Yuval Levin shared their perspectives on current challenges facing democracies worldwide, inspiring students to consider their roles in addressing these issues.
