Yevgenia Albats

SNF Agora Visiting Fellow, AY 23-24

Yevgenia Albats is a Russian investigative journalist, political scientist, author, and radio host. She is in exile now due to her journalism in Russia. Albats is editor-in-chief and CEO of The New Times, a once Moscow-based, Russian-language, independent political weekly (it went digital-only in June of 2017.) Since 2004, Albats has hosted Absolute Albats, a talk show on Echo Moskvy, the only remaining liberal radio station in Russia. The Russian government took it off the air ten days into the whole-scale aggression against Ukraine. Albats moved the show to her YouTube Channel, and keeps running it as she did while in Moscow.

Albats is currently living in the United States after she had to leave Russia, facing persecution from the Russian authorities, who had brought charges against her in July 2022 for her reporting on the war in Ukraine. In August 2022, Russian authorities pronounced her a “foreign agent working on behalf of Ukraine.” Albats was among the last Russian journalists to leave, profiled in The New Yorker. In March of 2023 Albats was one few Russian journalists who reported from the war-torn Ukraine.
